Background and research for the project

Food, Pharma, Cosmetics, Air care, Personal care, Vehicle care and many other industrial segments supply their products in cans and bottles that are dispensed in aerosols.

The aerosol industry in India currently uses LPG for filling and dispensing. The disadvantage of this approach is that the “product” will be in contact with LPG which will lead to some kind of contamination of the product and will also limit shelf life. In addition, LPG itself is not environment friendly which is why EU, US and many regions / countries are slowly restricting its use.

In the above scenario, we propose to introduce a brand-new approach based on a concept of barrier packaging called “Bag on Valve” (BOV). This approach isolates the “product” from all atmospheric / foreign elements, thereby preserving its original / uncontaminated purity at all times. The product is delivered in spray form through a non-return valve with the press of the nozzle head.

LPG gas is not needed. Further, all the components including the cans, valves are recyclable. As a result, the entire process and the final product are "environmentally friendly" and can be considered "green".

Since the "product" is not exposed to the air or other external elements, the product can be free of preservatives / stabilizers, etc. Which helps in delivering better purity of products.

As a consequence, the shelf life of the product will be increased. Therefore, taking back unsold products from supermarkets / stores will allow the manufacturer to pass the price savings on to the customer. This will also reduce the wastage / scrapping of unsold / expired products.

The product that will be delivered through aerosol technology will ensure an even spread on the surface. This will typically reduce by a significant margin the quantity of product (say, oil) that would have been used / consumed. In addition to economic benefits, we also have associated health benefits.

The flavours / aroma of the product will be retained for an extended duration (as long as it is used).

Other advantages of the container are low carbon footprint, easy recycling, cost-effectiveness, ergonomics, tactile warm touch, and BPA-free.

The product also has a longer shelf life, can be made free of preservatives / stabilizers, retains the flavor / aroma for longer periods, does not require refrigeration once opened (as many conventionally packaged products require), prevents contamination.
